Did You Miss Older Americans Month?

Did you miss Older Americans Month in May? Not to worry – you are now an even older American.

Every year, May is the month we focus on issues that matter to older people. Issues include wellness, independence, and how to stand up for yourself.

Presidential proclamations

Every president since JFK has issued a proclamation charging Americans to consider the gifts our elders have given us, and to consider their needs at this time of life. President Trump had this to say in a special proclamation, listing some of the enormous contributions of older people:

“Older Americans are our nation’s memory. Some of today’s grandparents and great-grandparents were born during the Great Depression, lived through the Second World War, witnessed the rise and fall of Communism, fought in Korea and Vietnam, marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., and watched the first man walk on the moon.”

Progress we have made

Older Americans Month has become part of that remarkable history. Setting aside the month of May to listen to what older Americans are going through, the honor was established in 1963.

Back then, only 17 million Americans lived to reach age 65. (That figure stands at 46 million today.)

A third of seniors lived under the poverty line back then. Elder law was just a dream.

But Older Americans Month was the start of a remarkable explosion of consciousness about the accomplishments, issues and needs shared by the generations that fought for the progress we have seen.

At Hughes Law Firm, of course, we focus on these issues every day of the year. But we enthusiastically endorse this special time of recognition.
